Quorn – Williams Creek 10 february 2007

In het Engels, zo stond het in mijn schrift!

Quorn till William Creek, the purple line.

morning view from the bus

6am
Damn! Again early again 6am.

Later in the bus I have to go the bathroom, like the rest. I thought I found the right tree, but I didn’t. Apparently everybody can see my bump, because I can hear some people say: “I can see her bump.” I can see the bus and they can see me. Ooh well, probably they will see it again in the next few days, so I just wave and smile.

We are driving through Flinders Range. From there you can call it the outback! The one and only. But the strange thing is. It’s still green, very green. Apparently there was a lot of rain one or two weeks ago. Jp says it’s really rare that you can so much green; normally it’s a lot more barren. Ny nose is stacked to the window. This is really wonderful. There are still a kind of hills around this area, so it’s not boring at all. There’s a lot of wild life as well. There are emus walking around and we saw a (tiger) snake on the road, very exciting! Guess this is it, the outback. I can say that this is very fulfilling.

Stopping for a (tiger)snake

Still a real road, but not for long

1pm
Lunch is in a pub in the outback village Marree. There are a lot of cowboys hanging on the wall (okay, photos of cowboys of course. Not real ones).
After lunch we visit a guy from Holland (hup Holland hup!) who lives here in the outback and makes really strange things. You have to imagine that at this moment there’s nothing more to see except for a road and dirt. Sometimes you cross a village with a few old looking houses. The last town we saw was a town with houses that looked like it was falling apart. Aboriginal people walking around with not much clothes and a corner of old cars packed together. What else then walking around in the heat or drinking a cold beer could you do? So if you’re living here by choice I think you need to have a good reason. I cant imagine living here makes you happy though, but guess this man does.

Important warnings for a outback tour like never leave your vehicle.

An outback toilet (read: flys => not very nice)

The Dutch man looks like a real outback guy. Long hair, a beard, old fashioned glasses and old and dirty clothes.
Living here gives you a lot of extra time to think about things that normal people don’t. Like the alphabet. That’s exactly what this man did, besides making art of speck stones. He showed us the meaning of the letters, according to him. I have to say it was really interesting and I was really surprised that nobody ever found this out. For exampleThe P stand for people.

The "p" for people

Or why is Australia called Australia?
Well, “AU” is the sign for gold and there is a lot of gold in Australia. “ST” means the sunshine and there is a lot of sun too. So it makes really sense!I get a paper with al the letters and some words written down, but it’s a big chaos! I cant understand a thing! But I will always keep the paper, because he told me only he has it (I’m not sure if that’s true, but that’s what he said).
I ask what my name is. He is writing it down on the blackboard.
“Sa” means sunrise. (don’t remember exactly why, but he did had good explanation)
”Ra” or “ar” always means sun. It comes from the faro of sun named Ra.

A typical outback man (a bit strange)

Not only strange men

His art work out of speckstones

Later in the afternoon.
After this it only to gets crazier and crazier. After again a long ride we arrive at a place with all these crazy arts things. Apparently this comes from a demonstration years ago. The government had a plan to build a nuclear center in the outback, right here. So they made strange things out of metal. Very logical right? Well yes, JP did tell me more about it but I kind of forgot it. But that doesn’t make it not interesting. It is still very funny, I mean a whole arts show in the middle of Australia, where almost nobody lives or comes. Thinking how many people come here and how many people there are in the world makes it very, uh… special? No, rare (and special too). There is one thing I really like. I think it is mend to be a music instrument. I will explain how I looks; Metal pipes hanging in the air, with all difference sizes and length (they are hollow too). When the winds comes you can hear all difference sounds coming from the metal pieces. A music instrument, don’t you thin?. We are not staying long thinking that its f*ing hot and dry. After 1 minute your throat is totally dry.

Crazy airplane things or is it a entering gate?

Muhaah! or new budy

Around 5pm
I’m wondering when we are going to see lake Eyre, because I’m really looking forward seeing that. Lake Eyre is a salt lake. It’s the biggest lake of Aussie. So there is a salt lake in the middle of Australia more then 1,000 k’s away from any sea? Apparently a long, long (believe me very long) time ago there was an inland sea. Too bad we only have a short time to look around. Run fast so you have more time is our motto. Not for long though, because our throat is starting to dry out again. I’m asking if we can walk on the lake, but no. There was a rain a few weeks ago (yes the same rain as before) and now it is to muddy. I’m trying to go as far as possible, but at a certain moment my feet are getting stuck in the mud! We are looking quite funny; around ten very, very muddy foots jumping around on a lake. I have this crazy idea: make a jump photo. Result: splashed mud on our legs. Yes, right. Very good idea.

Very, uh... lakey!! No not really :)

Mud splashing around

Not more then half an hour later we are at our last spotting place for the day. A Spa!!!! The girls are getting crazy. Will this be good for our skin? Will all our pimples disappear like the sun? Before going to the “spa” we have to change into our bikini. The changing room is a very, very nasty toilet! FAST, FAST. But that’s okay. Everything will be very peaceful in the “spa” and we all forget this nasty toilet. Because of the heat we would like to be in it as fast as possible. Run for your life!…
A spa?
…..
Where is it?
…..
Around the corner?

Oh look there is a cute, funny kind-of-bath-thing. This is the spa, what you do say? Haha! Funny joke, very funny.

…No, its not a joke. It’s is a spa. I’m wondering how we’re ever going to get in this “spa” together. You can say whatever you want, but at least it will be cozy. To be honest, I like cozy!As I jump in I noticed it is very weird. Our feet are getting lost into the mud and I’m not sure if this is animal proof and it doesn’t feel that nice either. But I can laugh about it, a lot. Just like we did yesterday and today, laughing a lot. You probably think we’re drunk, but we are not. We are just enjoying this funny, crazy little spa! When we come back we are striked again by bad luck. A flat tire! I’m really hoping we will make Alice Springs!

This is the "spa"

The only thing that rest us is to make it to William Creek. After some intensive group work we fixed the tire. I have to be honest, I was not included to that team, I'm always willing to help with thing, but fixing a flat tire? Never done that! Around 7 pm we arrive in Williams creek, the smallest town of Aussie. One house and of course one pub. Beside this and a lot of flies there’s nothing and I really mean nothing. After a walk around “town” I still didn’t find any thing special. It feels like you’re in the middle of the desert. Because its getting late and the sun is low the shad and the red dirt is gorgeous!
JP told us because its weekend maybe there will be some cowboys from the cattle stations in “town”. You cant miss the cattle station. That doesn’t mean that I can see the station, but there are so and I mean so many flies, that can only be a cattle station!

Nothing but this and...

This! (+ flies that you're not seeing at the photo)

The pub, that’s a whole new story. If you donate 5 dollar you can hang something on the wall. If you can find an empty spot! You can find anything here from a bra with cup size F till Dutch public transport cards.
The jukebox. The jukebox is really strange. There is nothing really wrong with the jukebox. But you know, you are in William Creek; The smallest town of Australia and there it is a jukebox with the whole album of the Black Eyed Peas, so that feels kind of weird

This is the pub, believe me its not a museum, its a real-real pub, with real-real beer!

Its getting dark, so we’re starting to make dinner with music at the background. I’m cutting. The food of course and not me, duhh. While I’m cutting I’m in for some guitar. Not that I can play, I only know some little song. While I’m playing they hand me carrot. You see, playing guitar with carrot in your mouth kind of makes you look like an idiot. Ha! That’s exactly who I am, but a crazy one. And the carrot? It tastes very good!

a really good way of making dinner. With a glass of wine!

Later in the evening 2 guys from discovery channel are joining us. They are going to join us tomorrow as well, just for one day. Discovery channel? Yeah, discovery channel! Sounds cool huh! Maybe they will film me too and finally someone appreciate my beauty at it true level and will be a real model. SARAH! You are dreaming.
Huh? oh

The flies are gone so after a whole music session we can sleep for the first time under the stars. JP was making songs about us, didn’t remember mine, but I will tell ya; it was a funny one. The lyrics was better then his voice though, but it was still sweet.

I think I’m paranoid about the whole snaky think. I’m only wearing thongs, its very dark and we are in thé outback of Australia. What’s more scarier? Almost nothing.
But it also gives me a vibe. I can complain, but I don’t want to. It’s a nice kind of scariness. The Canadian, she is really-really scared. But she fixed it al up. She is lying in the middle and everyone is lying around her in a circle., so that means that I’m not. Guess I’m the though girl! That tough makes me proud! I will survive the outback. To make it a picture perfect there’s also a big camp fire. I craw into my swag (that is a sort of sleepingbag cover with a pillow and mattress in it. You only have to put your sleepingbag and yourself in it, zip it and done! While I’m enjoying the fire I look up to the stars and seeing something un-be-lie-vea-ble! A Milky way. Not a normal one like the ones we have at home, but a real Milky way. The stars are shooting around (well, almost) and, and…it is hard to put it in words. I reckon this is one of these things that you have to see and I will leave it by this. And see you in the morning.

A camp fire

Do u see me looking up? the one at the left with those brown arms ;)

......

.....

And she really is!

Belangrijke note: wet your hair so it's wet when you get back to the group to make them really, really, really jealous! whoohoho.

Zo gezegd, zo gedikkie-daan.

Well i guess its gonna be a great trip, what do u think?

A good day!
